Senate Approves Reauthorization of NHSC, CHCs

April 19, 2002 - The Senate April 16 approved the "Health Care Safety Net Amendments of 2002" (S. 1533) by unanimous consent, reauthorizing several safety net programs including the National Health Service Corps and the Community Health Centers. The legislation also establishes the Healthy Communities Access Program, which is designed to provide assistance to communities and consortia of health care providers to develop or strengthen integrated health care delivery systems that coordinate health services for uninsured or underinsured individuals.

Within the NHSC section of the legislation, participation in both the scholarship and loan repayment programs is expanded to include certain mental health professionals, demonstration projects for part-time service are authorized, and assignment of Corps personnel to for profit sites is allowed if the site agrees to accept all patients regardless of ability to pay.

Similar legislation has been introduced in the House (H.R. 3450).
