USDA to Reconsider J-1 Visa Waiver Program

April 19, 2002 - The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) April 16 announced that it would process the 86 requests for waivers of the J-1 Visa home country residence requirement for foreign physicians that were pending when the agency withdrew from the program last month [see Washington Highlights, March 22]. The Departments of Justice and State will assist with security reviews of the individuals, and the Department of Health and Human4 Services will certify each doctor's credentials. USDA officials also announced that President Bush has called for an interagency task force to review the J-1 Visa program for foreign physicians.
