AAMC Participates in Health Professions Capitol Hill Day

April 19, 2002 - Over 20 leaders from various health professions disciplines visited 25 Congressional offices on April 17 to advocate for increased funding for the Title VII and VIII health professions programs. Richard Krugman, M.D., dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, represented the AAMC during the Health Professions Leadership Capitol Hill Day, which was sponsored by the Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC). Dr. Krugman spoke at a breakfast briefing along with John E. Maupin, D.D.S., president of Meharry Medical College, and Jim Martin, M.D., president-elect of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The Hill Day participants visited Members of Congress to urge that funding be restored to the programs, which are cut by 71 percent in the president's FY 2003 proposed budget. HPNEC is an informal alliance of over 40 organizations representing a variety of providers, institutions, and community partnerships dedicated to educating the nation's health care personnel.
