Interim Management Team Named at CDC

April 5, 2002 - Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson March 29 announced a four person interim management team to oversee operations at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) until a new director is named. Former Director Jeffrey Koplan resigned on March 31. Secretary Thompson named CDC Deputy Director for Science and Public Health David Fleming, M.D., as acting director; James Hughes, M.D., and Julie Gerberding, M.D., to lead the agency's bioterrorism efforts; and Michael Osteholm, M.D., to serve as the Secretary's liaison to the CDC during the transition.
