President Announces Nominees for NIH, Surgeon General

March 29, 2002 - President Bush March 26 announced his intention to nominate Elias Zerhouni, M.D., to be Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Richard Carmona, M.D., to be Surgeon General. Both positions require confirmation by the Senate.

Dr. Elias Zerhouni currently serves as executive vice dean and chair of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In his announcement, President Bush noted that "Dr. Zerhouni shares my view that human life is precious, and should not be exploited or destroyed for the benefits of others. And he shares my view that the promise of ethically conducted medical research is limitless." AAMC Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., offered the Association's support for Dr. Zerhouni, stating,"I am confident that he will provide the kind of scientific leadership needed as the 15th director of NIH." Dr. Cohen also expressed his gratitude to Ruth Kirschstein, M.D., for her stewardship of the NIH for the past 27 months.

Dr. Richard Carmona is currently clinical professor of Surgery, Public Health, and Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona, as well as chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System. His background includes service as a Green Beret in Vietnam, a police officer and SWAT team member. Dr. Carmona was recognized as the Physician of the Year in Pima County, Arizona in 1993 and has been listed as one of the nation's "Top Cops" by the National Association of Police Organizations.
