President Announces Nominees
for NIH, Surgeon General
March 29, 2002 - President Bush March 26 announced
his intention to nominate Elias Zerhouni, M.D., to be Director
of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Richard Carmona,
M.D., to be Surgeon General. Both positions require confirmation
by the Senate.
Dr. Elias Zerhouni currently serves as executive vice dean
and chair of the Department of Radiology and Radiological
Science at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In
his announcement, President Bush noted that "Dr. Zerhouni
shares my view that human life is precious, and should not
be exploited or destroyed for the benefits of others. And
he shares my view that the promise of ethically conducted
medical research is limitless." AAMC Jordan J. Cohen,
M.D., offered the Association's support for Dr. Zerhouni,
stating,"I am confident that he will provide the kind
of scientific leadership needed as the 15th director of NIH."
Dr. Cohen also expressed his gratitude to Ruth Kirschstein,
M.D., for her stewardship of the NIH for the past 27 months.
Dr. Richard Carmona is currently clinical professor of Surgery,
Public Health, and Family and Community Medicine at the University
of Arizona, as well as chairman of the State of Arizona Southern
Regional Emergency Medical System. His background includes
service as a Green Beret in Vietnam, a police officer and
SWAT team member. Dr. Carmona was recognized as the Physician
of the Year in Pima County, Arizona in 1993 and has been listed
as one of the nation's "Top Cops" by the National
Association of Police Organizations.
