On the Hill

March 22, 2002 - The Senate March 15 confirmed the nomination of Sally Stroup as Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education at the Department of Education. Ms. Stroup is best known for her tenure as the top aide to former House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairman William Goodling (R-Pa.) from 1995 to 2001.

Rep. Ernie Fletcher (R-Ky.) was named March 14 to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, taking the seat vacated by Steve Largent (R-Okla.), who retired in February. Dr. Fletcher, a family practitioner, is one of eight physicians in the House of Representatives. Because the Energy and Commerce Committee is considered an "exclusive" committee, Dr. Fletcher is required to give up his seats on the Agriculture, Budget and Education and the Workforce committees.
