AHRQ Director Dies at 55
March 15, 2002 - John M. Eisenberg, M.D., M.B.A.,
director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
(AHRQ), died March 10 after a yearlong battle with a brain
tumor. Dr. Eisenberg served as director of AHRQ since April
1997, and prior to that was chairman of the Department of
Medicine, and physician-in-chief at Georgetown University.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Eisenberg spearheaded
the federal effort to improve patient safety and reduce medical
errors, as leader of the Quality Interagency Coordination
(QUIC) Task Force. AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D. said
in a statement, "At the age of 55, Eisenberg had already
established a reputation as one of the most gifted and effective
leaders of American medicine and as one of the country's most
respected champions of high quality, evidenced-based, cost-effective,
and accessible health care. His death creates an enormous
void, but his life provides an even greater inspiration for
the innumerable friends and colleagues who were privileged
to know him."
More information on the life and work of Dr. Eisenberg and
a statement by HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson are available
on the AHRQ
Web site.
