NIH Issues RFA to Strengthen Institution Human Subjects Protection Activities

March 8, 2002 - The National Institutes of Health (NIH) March 5 issued a new Request for Applications "to provide short-term interim support for institutional activities that will strengthen oversight of human subjects research at institutions that receive significant NIH support for clinical research." NIH states that awards are intended to support activities that "enhance the protection of research subjects by means that will be sustained by the institution after the award period ends." The RFA states that this "is a one-time solicitation; it is not anticipated that this RFA will be reissued."

Although all NIH components supporting clinical research are providing support for this program, it will be administered by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). NIH intends to commit approximately $28.5 million in FY 2002 to fund up to 174 grants in response to this RFA. The institutions eligible to receive support under this program are listed in the RFA.

Applications are due by May 7 and the anticipated award date is Sept. 1, 2002.
