HHS Releases Final Report of 2000 Nursing Survey

March 1, 2002 - Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson released the final report of the 2000 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses, coupled with the launch of a campaign to encourage school children to consider careers in nursing and the health professions.

The nursing survey, the most extensive and comprehensive statistical resource on registered nurses with current licenses to practice in the United States, suggests that too few young people are choosing careers in nursing, and the average age of registered nurses has increased substantially.

The education campaign, "Kids into Health Careers," is designed to attract more children to careers in nursing and the health professions. Education kits for parents, teachers, and organizations include information on level of education needed and salary outlook for a variety of health professions careers.
