Briefing Features September 11 First Responders

March 1, 2002 - The Partnership for Community Safety: Strengthening America's Readiness sponsored a Feb. 21 briefing on Capitol Hill highlighting the efforts of first responders in New York City and Washington, D.C., following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Grace Shum, R.N., assistant vice president for ambulatory services at NYU Downtown Hospital, described how her hospital and staff responded following the attack.

The Partnership, representing firefighters, paramedics and other EMS professionals, emergency physicians, all other physicians, hospital officials, medical education professionals, public health officials, nurses and state regulatory agencies in the United States, advocates strengthening community readiness for biological, chemical, and nuclear terrorism and other disasters.

Other speakers included Jim O'Connor, vice president of MetroCare Ambulance, who coordinated the ambulance services at the World Trade Center after the attack, and Thom Mayer, M.D., director of the Emergency Department at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia, who responded to the attack on the Pentagon and the anthrax emergency.
