CDC Director Resigns, FDA Gains Deputy Director

March 1, 2002 - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Jeffrey Koplan, M.D., announced his resignation from the agency, effective March 31. Dr. Koplan has served as director since 1998 and cited the agency's response to the anthrax letters and the effort to build up the nation's defense against bioterrorism as highlights of his term.

Lester M. Crawford, Jr., D.V.M., Ph.D., was named Feb. 25 as deputy commissioner of the Food And Drug Administration. Dr. Crawford will head the agency until a permanent commissioner is named. Most recently, Dr. Crawford served as head of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at Virginia Tech University. He has previously served as administrator of the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, and executive director of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.
