Senate Passes STOP Stroke Act

February 15, 2002 - The Senate Feb. 5 approved by unanimous consent the Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention Act (STOP Stroke Act), S. 1274, cosponsored by Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). The companion bill in the House, H.R. 3431, sponsored by Reps. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) and Chip Pickering (R-Miss.), currently has 109 cosponsors.

The bill is designed to raise public awareness about stroke; provide critical resources for states to implement statewide stroke care systems; establish a clearinghouse to collect data and share best practices; and offer medical professional development programs in new stroke therapies.
