Acting Directors Named at NIDA, NIMH, NIAAA

January 11, 2002 - National Institutes of Health (NIH) Acting Director Ruth Kirschstein, M.D., has named acting directors for three NIH institutes: Glen Hanson, D.D.S., Ph.D., at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Richard Nakamura, Ph.D., at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and Raynard Kington, M.D., Ph.D., at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

Dr. Hanson was named to his post on Dec. 1, 2001, following the departure of Alan Leshner, Ph.D., for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Hanson previously served as director of NIDA's Division of Neuroscience and Behavioral Research. Dr. Nakamura replaces Steven Hyman M.D., who left NIMH to become Provost of Harvard University. Dr. Nakamura has worked at NIMH since 1976 and has served as the institute's deputy director since 1997. Dr. Kington assumed the director's position at NIAAA on Jan. 2, following the retirement of Enoch Gordis, M.D. Dr. Kington will continue to serve in his positions as NIH's Associate Director for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research and Director of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research.
