NIH Posts Notices for Application to Loan Repayment Programs

January 11, 2002 - The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Jan. 8 posted notices soliciting applications for the NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program for Clinical Researchers and the Extramural Pediatric Research Loan Repayment Program. Both programs are designed to encourage new physicians and other health professionals to pursue research careers. Creation of an educational loan repayment program for clinical researchers was a major recommendation of an advisory panel to the NIH Director (the Nathan panel) in 1997. The program was created by an act of Congress and strongly supported by AAMC and other organizations.

The deadline for applications to both programs is Feb. 28, 2002. Applications submitted by this date will be considered for awards in the current fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, 2002.
