House Approves Loan Repayment Waivers for Reservists

The House of Representatives Oct. 23 unanimously approved H.R. 3086, the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act, also known as the HEROES Act, authorizing the Secretary of Education to grant loan repayment waivers for military reservists called to active duty to address the national emergency. The HEROES Act also extends any waivers and modifications to individuals and family members of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. In addition, H.R. 3086 expresses a sense of the Congress that all higher education institutions should offer full refunds to persons called to active duty for periods of instruction the student was unable to complete because of such service.
