Bush Nominates
Key Positions at HHS, VA, Education
President Bush Oct. 16 announced his intention to nominate Eve Slater,
M.D., to be Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Health;
Robert Roswell. M.D., to be VA Under Secretary for Health; and Sally
Stroup to be Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education at the
Department of Education.
Dr. Slater is currently Senior Vice President for Clinical and Regulatory
Development at Merck Research Laboratories. A graduate of Columbia University
College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Slater has also served as Chief
of the Hypertension Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Roswell
is currently Director of Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)
8, which covers Florida and Puerto Rico. He also serves as a Professor
in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University
of South Florida College of Public Health and is a graduate of Oklahoma
University Medical School. Ms. Stroup is currently the chief Washington
Lobbyist for the University of Phoenix. She previously served as a senior
aide to former Representative William Goodling (R-Pa.) when he was chairman
of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
