Terrorism Bill
Includes Provisions Related to Student Records
The terrorism bill (H.R.
2975) approved by the House of Representatives Oct. 12 includes
provisions allowing federal authorities more access to student records,
but would necessitate a judge's permission and require authorities to
indicate how the records would be used. The bill would also provide
liability protections to institutions that release the records in good
faith. The Senate approved similar legislation (S.
1510) on Oct. 11. Earlier versions of the terrorism bill would have
allowed greater access to student's records, and the higher education
community has expressed support for the new provisions.
