Bush to Nominate Claude Allen As Deputy HHS Secretary

President Bush announced March 23 that he intends to nominate Claude A. Allen to be Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services. Mr. Allen currently serves as Secretary of Health and Human Resources in Virginia, a post he has held since January 1998. From 1995 to 1998, he was counsel to the Virginia Attorney General and, later, Deputy Attorney General for the Civil Litigation Division in the Attorney General's office. Mr. Allen was an Associate at Baker & Botts in Washington, D.C. from 1991 to 1995. Prior to that he served as a professional staff member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and Duke University Law School.
