House Subcommittee
Approves Funding Increase for FDA
The House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee June 6 marked up
its FY 2002 spending bill, providing $1.218 billion for the Food and
Drug Administration. This is $120.4 million (11 percent) over last year
and $7 million more than the President's budget. The subcommittee approved
$15.519 billion for the entire bill - $110 million more than the President's
budget. The FY 2001 funding level was $18.716 billion, but this included
$3.639 billion for natural disaster assistance and other emergency appropriations.
Appropriations Committee Chairman Bill Young (R-Fla.) expressed his
hope that the full Appropriations Committee would hear the bill on June
13.
The Agriculture Subcommittee is the first of the 13 appropriations
subcommittees to receive its 302(b) funding allocation for FY 2002,
and the first to mark-up a bill. The other 12 subcommittees are expected
to receive their allocations on June 8.
