On the Hill
Congressman Joseph Moakley (D-Mass.) passed away May 28 after a protracted
battle with leukemia. First elected to the House in 1972, Rep. Moakley
had previously announced in February that he would not seek a 16th term.
He served as the ranking Democrat on the Rules Committee. Massachusetts
Governor Jane Swift (R) is expected to call a special election to complete
the remainder of Rep. Moakley's term.
Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-Fla.) announced his intention to resign from
the House of Representatives, effective Sept. 6. He cited the desire
to spend more time with his children as the major impetus for his resignation.
Rep. Scarborough also indicated his possible pursuit of a post in the
Bush Administration. Florida Governor Jeb Bush (R) will call a special
election for later this year to select Rep. Scarborough's replacement.
