National Health Service Corps Moves Bureaus

Elizabeth James Duke, Ph.D., acting administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administrations (HRSA), officially announced July 10 that the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) division is moving from the Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) to the Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr). Also moving are the Division for Scholarships and Loan Repayments, which administers the scholarships and loans for the Corps, and the Shortage Designation Division, which determines the definition of a Health Professions Shortage Area (HPSA). Sam Shekar, M.D., M.P.H., associate administrator of the Bureau of Health Professions, will head up these programs, effective immediately. The agency hopes that consolidating management of the NHSC and related programs with the existing programs in BHPr will enhance the bureau's ability to train and place health professionals in underserved areas.
