Senate Confirms
HHS, VA and Education Secretaries; OMB Director
The Senate Jan. 24 confirmed former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson
(R) as Secretary of Health and Human Services. During his confirmation
hearing, Secretary Thompson expressed his support for continuing the effort
to double the budget of the National Institutes of Health. The Senate previously
confirmed former Houston Independent School District superintendent Rod
Paige and Secretary of Education; Anthony Principi, who served as acting
secretary under President George H.W. Bush, as Secretary of Veterans Affairs;
and former senior vice president at Eli Lilly & Co. Mitchell Daniels
as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
