Subcommittee Chairs, Committee Memberships Announced

As the House and Senate continue to organize for the 107th Congress, numerous subcommittee chairmanships and committee slots have been announced.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) announced Jan. 5 that Rep. Nancy Johnson (R-Conn.) will head up the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee. In addition, Mr. Thomas created a new subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, to be headed by Rep. Jim McCrery (R-La.). The new subcommittee will consider revenue items on a case-by-case basis at the referral of the chairman. Reps. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will be the two new Republican members of the Ways and Means Committee for the 107th Congress.

In the renamed House Energy and Commerce Committee, Chairman Billy Tauzin announced Jan. 11 that Rep. Michael Bilirakis (R-Fla.) will continue to chair the Subcommittee on Health. Formerly known as the Subcommittee on Health and Environment, the subcommittee's jurisdiction has been changed, which allows Mr. Bilirakis to continue as subcommittee chair.

The House Democratic leadership has yet to announce committee assignments for its caucus.

On the Senate side, a number of committees have yet to fully reorganize. As the election created an even split between Republicans and Democrats, the Senate Republican and Democratic leadership have agreed to equally split committee ratios.

Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) have been added to the Senate Finance Committee.Sens.
