The first session of the 107th Congress convened Jan. 3. Dennis Hastert
(R-Ill.) was elected Speaker of the House by a vote of 222 to 207 (with
2 members voting present). The House Republican Conference was scheduled
to vote Jan. 4 on committee chairmanships.
Citing health concerns for himself and his wife, Rep. Bud Shuster (R-Pa.)
announced Jan. 4 that he will retire Jan. 31. Rep. Shuster, 68, has represented
the 9th District in south-central Pennsylvania since 1973. He completed
his sixth and last year as chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee in December.
