The president Dec. 29 signed H.R.
1795, establishing the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and
Bioengineering at the NIH. The NIH plans to set up the institute and
then begin the search for a director. Current activities of the Bioengineering
Consortium (BECON) within the Office of the Director, such as the 2001
Symposium and research partnership initiatives, will continue, but eventually
become part of the new institute. The advisory committee required by the
legislation will be formed once the institute is established.
