Reps. Randy Cunningham (R-Calif.) and Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) introduced
the Men's Health Act of 2001 (H.R.
632) Feb. 14. The bill would create an Office of Men's Health within
HHS to promote research and education about diseases affecting men in this
country. Rep. Cunningham introduced similar legislation last year.
The office would concentrate on directing research and disseminating
information to the public on the importance of early detection and timely
treatment for primarily male diseases. One disease of concern is prostate
cancer, which killed 32,000 men last year. The bill also calls for a report
two years after enactment from the office on its activities.
