The Senate Feb. 1 finalized subcommittee assignments for the Appropriations
Committee in the 107th Congress. For the Labor HHS Subcommittee, Republicans
added Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) to replace Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) who moved off the
Appropriations Committee to join the Finance Committee. Democrats named
Mary Landrieu (D-La.) to replace Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who left
the subcommittee. Republicans did not replace former Senator Slade Gorton
(R-Wash.) on the subcommittee as committee ratios are now even at seven
members per party. Republicans still control the gavel with Arlen Specter
(R-Pa.) as the subcommittee chairman.
On the VA, HUD and Independent Agencies Subcommittee, Republicans named
Senators Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) and DeWine to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison
(R-Texas) and Kyl. Democrats added Senators Herb Kohl (D-Wisc.) and Tim
Johnson (D-S.D.) to replace former Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and
to fill a newly added seat. Senator Kit Bond (R-Mo.) continues to serve
as chairman.
