Representative Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) announced his resignation from
the House of Representatives, effective Aug. 6. Rep. Hutchinson's nomination
to be Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was approved
by the Senate on Aug. 2. Rep. Hutchinson was first elected to the House
in 1996. Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R) will call a special election
to select Rep. Hutchinson's successor.
Representative William Coyne (D-Pa.) announced Aug. 3 his intention
to retire at the end of the 107th Congress. Rep. Coyne is the fourth
ranking Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee. He was first elected
to the House in 1980.
