Senate Panel Approves Stroke Bill

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Aug.1 approved Chairman Edward Kennedy's (D-Mass.) Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention Act (S. 1274), which would provide targeted funding for prevention, treatment, and research programs.

Included in the bill are provisions for a public awareness campaign; an information clearinghouse; grants to establish statewide prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation systems; and programs for medical personnel in the use of new therapies for stroke treatment and prevention. The programs are authorized through 2006. The AAMC has endorsed this bill.
