Approves Stroke Bill
The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Aug.1 approved
Chairman Edward Kennedy's (D-Mass.) Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention
Act (S.
1274), which would provide targeted funding for prevention, treatment,
and research programs.
Included in the bill are provisions for a public awareness campaign;
an information clearinghouse; grants to establish statewide prevention,
treatment, and rehabilitation systems; and programs for medical personnel
in the use of new therapies for stroke treatment and prevention. The
programs are authorized through 2006. The AAMC has endorsed this bill.
