President Bush Aug. 2, 2005 signed into law AAMC supported legislation (S. 45, P.L. 109-56), which removes the current statutory limit on physician group practices that treat substance abuse patients. Prior to the enactment of S. 45, physician group practices were limited to treating a total of 30 substance abuse patients. The House passed S. 45 on July 27 by 429-0. The Senate passed S. 45 by unanimous consent on July 19. The sponsors of the House and Senate legislation were Representative Mark Souder (R-Ind.) and Senators Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Joseph Biden (D-Del.)
