Current Status
FY 2008
On July 18, the House of Representatives approved, 276-140, its
FY 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education spending
bill. The Senate Appropriations Committee approved its version of
the spending bill on June 21. Both bills provide $329.6 million
for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), which
is a $10.6 million (3.3 percent) increase above FY 2007. $30 million
is allocated for clinical effectiveness research, a $15 million
increase above last year, while patient safety research is cut by
$5.1 million to $79.0 million for FY 2008. Both bills fund AHRQ
through a direct appropriation, rather than transfers from other
agencies, which is how the agency was funded in FY 2007 and in the
President's propsoed FY 2008 budget.
FY 2007
On February 15, President Bush signed a spending package (H.J.
Res 20) to fund much of the federal government for the remainder
of FY 2007. The FY 2007 funding resolution maintains funding for
AHRQ at the FY 2006 level of $319 million.
AAMC Activity
As part of the Friends, the AAMC participates in Hill visits,
meetings with the agency, briefings, and sign onto letters to Congress.
The AAMC signed Friends of AHRQ letters dated March 15 to House
and Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chairs
and Ranking Members, requesting $350 million for the agency in FY
2008.
