Letter to House and Senate Conferees

November 8, 2001

The Honorable Ralph Regula
Chairman
Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services,
Education, and Related Agencies
Committee on Appropriations
U.S. House of Representatives
2358 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

The undersigned member organizations of the Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) thank you for the increase in funding for the Title VII and VIII health professions programs provided in the FY 2002 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill. In light of the recent tragic events and subsequent new urgent priorities facing Congress, we appreciate your support for the education and training programs that are preparing the health workforce of tomorrow.

By providing $385 million for these programs, you will enable them to increase efforts to educate and train health providers who diversify and improve the quality of the health professions population. Many students and practicing health care providers have come to rely on this assistance, and this funding increase allows them to work in rural and other underserved areas, where quality health care is most desperately needed.

The members of HPNEC applaud your continued commitment to these programs that serve to expand and diversify the health care workforce. As you know, a top priority for many Americans is access to quality health care, and all of the health professions and nursing education programs authorized under Title VII and VIII of the Public Health Service Act are critical elements in providing this access. The spectrum of programs is designed to train and educate a wide range of providers, all of whom deliver needed health services, and we urge you not to increase funding for some areas at the expense of others while negotiating the FY 2002 Labor-HHS appropriations bill. Thank you again for your continued support.
