CorrespondenceLetter to the House and Senate Conferees July 6, 2000
Dear Chairman Porter: The undersigned members of the Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) urge you to support increased funding for the health professions programs in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill. We ask that you provide the House-passed number of $410 million, which includes $330 million for the health professions and nursing education programs authorized under Title VII and VIII of the Public Health Service Act, so that these programs can continue to fulfill their mission of providing national leadership to assure the health professions workforce meets the health care needs of the public. The Title VII and VIII health professions and nursing education programs provide support to students, programs, departments, and institutions to increase the supply and diversity of health care providers, improve the geographic distribution of the health care workforce, and increase access to health care for underserved and minority populations. To meet these goals, we urge the conferees to provide $410 million for the health professions programs. Thank you for your continued efforts to improve health care in this country. A top priority for many Americans is access to quality health care, and health professions and nursing education programs are a critical element in providing this access. The members of HPNEC urge you to consider the importance of these programs and support the House mark while negotiating the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education FY 2001 budget. Sincerely, HPNEC |
