Call for Submissions
Have you ever been inspired by an experience in a medical school or teaching hospital to create a piece of artwork? Academic Medicine is seeking submissions of original artwork in any visual medium to be featured on the cover of the journal.
Submissions should be inspired by some aspect of the academic medicine experience—for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, teaching, or being treated in a teaching hospital. Submissions may reflect such experiences from any perspective: teacher or learner, patient or caregiver, researcher, or human participant in an experiment.
Teaching and Learning Moments
You have the option of submitting a related Teaching and Learning
Moments (TLM) essay as a narrative companion to your artwork. Although
it is not a required component of a cover art submission, a TLM
essay can help explain the connection between your work and your
academic medicine experience. The related narrative should adhere
to TLM essay submission guidelines, which are found on page 4, section
3b, of Complete
Instructions for Authors. Based on the individual strength of
related artwork and TLM essays, we may occasionally choose to publish
one without the other.
Instructions for Submitting Cover Art
-
To submit art to Academic Medicine, go to Editorial
Manager . If you do not already have an account, click "Register."
-
When you've logged into your account and chosen to submit a
new manuscript, select "Cover Art" as the manuscript
type.
-
Follow the prompts to enter all required information on your submission form.
-
In your cover letter, be sure to indicate your selected media and alert us if you've included a TLM essay with your submission. Also include the artist's contact information.
-
In the Abstract field, simply enter "No abstract required."
-
The final step before submission is uploading your files. Upload your image file(s) according to the specifications below, as well as a Microsoft Word file of your TLM essay if you have chosen to submit one. The uploaded files will be combined in a single PDF, but we will be able to access each source file individually.
-
Once you've completed the submission form and successfully converted your files into a PDF, submit your AM Cover Art for consideration.
Image Specifications
When choosing an image to submit, please keep in mind that the publisher requires high-resolution TIFF files with a minimum of 300 dpi resolution. The publisher also requests that the image be at least 4 ¼" x 4 ¼" (with the ideal size being 4 ¼" x 4 ½"). We prefer vertical or square images over horizontal ones. Any image submitted should be grayscale or CMYK. Please understand that images may need to be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space.
Notification
The Academic Medicine editorial staff will consider all submissions and choose the most suitable ones for publication. You will be notified of our final decision about your submission via e-mail as soon as possible. Accepted submissions will be assigned a publication month, contingent on the artist signing an AAMC Artist Consent Form.
