AAMC Internships - Summer 2008

The AAMC and the medical schools, teaching hospitals, academic and professional societies, faculty, residents, and students we represent are committed to improving the nation's health through medical education, research, and high-quality patient care. We are dedicated to the communities we serve, committed to advancing the public good, and steadfast in our desire to earn and keep the public's trust for the role we are privileged to play in our society.

The AAMC's full-time staff of over 400 is based in Washington, D.C., and is divided into several offices and divisions, from member services to governmental relations to biomedical and health sciences research. We are conveniently located in an exciting location near Foggy Bottom, Dupont Circle, and Georgetown.

Internship Program Quick Facts


  • Internships are paid at competitive hourly rates!
  • Full-time (35-hour week) and a limited number of part-time opportunities will be available.
  • Learn about areas of interest to you, such as public health, research, data analysis, medical education, constituent support/relations, communications, information technology, administration, governmental relations, and more.
  • Gain valuable experience. Work on projects both independently and as part of a team in a friendly, collegial environment. Some past interns have even gone on to gain full-time employment!

What are the qualifications?


  • Must be currently enrolled part-time or full-time an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university.
  • Students from all class years will be considered, with first preference given to rising seniors and juniors.
  • An interest in nonprofit association careers and/or issues related to public health helpful but not required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Familiarity and comfort with conducting Internet research.
  • Capable of producing clearly written documents that are meaningful to and appropriate for a variety of audiences.
  • Coursework or experience with research methodologies, design, and analysis may be required for research-oriented positions.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, professionalism, maturity, responsibility, and self-motivation.
  • Excellent reasoning ability.
  • The ability to work both as an individual contributor and as a member of a team.

Internship Opportunities

Internal Infrastructure Intern - Technology Services

Responsibilities: The Internal Infrastructure/Technology Services team seeks a summer Intern to help map processes and systems infrastructure, as well as support the team administratively and on other projects as needed. The Intern will gain practical experience, new or increased skills in many commonly-used software tools, develop skills in process mapping, documentation, and cross-training as well as learn many aspects of AAMC business, and develop presentation, writing, and other professional skills in many areas.

Requirements: Must be currently enrolled in a degree program, ideally pursuing a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Candidates should be quick learners, willing to learn new software, and have the ability to work independently. Must have Visio and MS Office tools experience (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Some network/systems admin/infrastructure experience helpful but not required; the ability to troubleshoot problems is important. Apply by e-mail!

Student Affairs and Programs Intern

Responsibilities: Student Affairs and Programs (SAP) is seeking a summer intern to provide support for a variety of projects underway. Intern will work closely with SAP staff, who will have considerable contact with medical school student affairs administrators. Specific responsibilities may include: assisting with maintenance and updating Web site and constituent database information; assisting with logistical projects for professional development conferences, committee meetings, and training sessions; assisting various annual meeting related projects; and other duties as assigned by SAP staff.

Requirements: Must be currently enrolled in a degree program, ideally pursuing a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline. Candidates should have strong computer skills and understanding of how to navigate and utilize the internet. The Intern will need to be detailed oriented and able to complete large tasks with little supervision. Interest and experience in medical education or association membership management is preferred. Proficiency in Excel is an absolute must. Apply by e-mail!
