Peter G. Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D.

Peter G. Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D.
School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Go to the Web site for the Pathology Education Instructional Resource (PEIR) and you'll instantly see how Peter Anderson is improving medical education. It is at this online repository of more than 40,000 medical images that Dr. Anderson's passion for new technology, shared knowledge, and teaching excellence come together in a unique way to enhance education for all learners.

Dr. Anderson, a veterinarian who trained in human pathology, is professor of pathology at the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where he also serves as director of pathology undergraduate education.

At the forefront of technology-enhanced learning, Dr. Anderson is widely known for his keen interest in experimenting with electronic teaching approaches and distance learning. PEIR has become a popular resource for teaching the "image-rich" discipline of pathology and is now used by most medical schools, as well as users in 150 countries.

In addition to PEIR, Dr. Anderson created and currently maintains the Web site for the Group for Research in Pathology Education (GRIPE), an organization for enhancing the quality of pathology education. Similar to PEIR, the GRIPE image database also includes peer-reviewed test materials for instructors. Accessible to subscribing members, GRIPE allows faculty to pool resources and even post requests to an "image wish list" to locate hard-to-find photographs.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Anderson works to ensure the excellence of UAB medical education in a variety of ways. As coordinator of the pre-clerkship phase of the new curriculum and a member of numerous ad hoc committees for curricular design and improvement, Dr. Anderson has, according to colleagues, "played a central leadership role in contributing to curricular design and management and implementation of curricular strategies at a variety of levels." He also serves as a mentor for the Master Teacher Program, as well as to students at all levels of education, including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and even a high school student interested in pursuing a career in science.

At the national level, Dr. Anderson impacts the field of pathology far beyond the UAB campus by serving as a test material developer for the United States Medical Licensing Examination™ (USMLE) Step 1 exam, as an appointee to the USMLE Step 1 Interdisciplinary Review Committee, and in his recent role as president of the Course Director's Section of the Association of Pathology Chairs—-where he now serves as co-chair of the course director's workshops.

Shaping medical education on a global scale, Dr. Anderson is a founding member of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), a group that seeks to enhance excellence and innovation in all aspects of science education. In addition to his role as IAMSE vice president, he serves on its board of directors and recently acted as chair of the group's technology committee.

Before earning his Ph.D. degree in experimental pathology at UAB, Dr. Anderson completed his B.A. degree in zoology at the University of Washington and stayed in the Evergreen State to receive his D.V.M. degree at Washington State University before moving south.

The author of many research articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts, Dr. Anderson serves on the editorial boards of numerous books and Web sites, including BioMed Central, an online database, and "Cardiovascular Pathology," the journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology.
