    Based on the AAMC Group on Resident Affairs’ Institutional GME Leadership Competencies, the GME Leadership Development Certificate Program, an application-based certificate program, is the premier longitudinal educational experience to establish the necessary skill set for new GME leaders, and enrich the knowledge of more advanced participants. This program helps participants build the leadership capabilities, knowledge, and skills essential for high-performing GME leaders. Through real-world scenarios, and other various interactive teaching platforms, participants will enhance their ability to apply a practical and strategic approach to managing, directing, and leading their educational offices and staff. Through the selection, development, and implementation of an Action Learning Project (ALP), participants will apply their leadership skills and integrate valuable lessons from the course to make a significant contribution at their institution. Participants share their projects with others in the graduate medical education community during the Group on Resident Affairs' spring meeting; where they will present a poster, graduate, and attend informative sessions to further enhance their proficiency as a GME leader.

    This certificate program prepares participants to transition the program’s concepts into actionable constructs that enhance their work, regardless of the size or scope of their organization. Emphasis is placed on developing relationships with individuals and national workgroups outside of their own institution and specialty.

    Components

    Participants successfully completing the following activities will receive an AAMC issued Certificate of Completion:

    1. One in-person and one virtual module designed specifically to enhance knowledge and skills required for successful GME leaders;
    2. Pre- and post-module assignments;
    3. Real-life application through the selection, development and implementation of an individual Action Learning Project (ALP). This project will provide participants with an opportunity to interact with key stakeholders across their institution, apply learnings from the program, and obtain periodic feedback from their faculty project mentor and fellow peers;
    4. Presentation of an ALP poster and attendance during an AAMC Group on Resident Affairs Spring Meeting.

    Who Should Attend?

    GME leaders, with up to five years’ experience in an Institutional GME leadership role, who are responsible for the institutional oversight of GME at an AAMC member institution including: designated institutional officials, GME deans, vice presidents for academic affairs, GME directors, and others. Leaders with more experience are welcome to apply and placement will be granted on a case by case basis; however, the course is most beneficial for those newer in their institutional GME leadership position. 

    Upcoming Certificate Program

    To successfully complete the program, participants are required to attend the September (in-person) and January (virtual) modules and the AAMC Group on Resident Affairs (GRA) Spring Meeting in their entirety.

    Application & Fees

    The application process for the 2024-2025 program is open through May 8. The application fee for the 2024-2025 Certificate Program is $2,950 and includes payment for the September and January workshops. This fee also includes program materials, faculty, and peer mentoring on your Action Learning Project (ALP), some meals, and networking activities. The application fee does not include the optional CME fee, travel or hotel accommodations, registration, CME or attendance at the 2025 Group on Resident Affairs spring meeting, for which attendance is required to graduate, present your ALP poster, and receive an AAMC Certificate of Completion.

    Applicants will be required to complete a series of application questions and submit a letter of support from your institutional supervisor or sponsor. Decision notifications will be shared with applicants in early June.

    Program Objectives

    Upon successful completion of the certificate program, participants will have enhanced their abilities to:

    • Develop and enhance regional and national networks of professional peer groups, in addition to understanding the specialty groups available for membership;
    • Understand and actualize the difference between management and leadership, knowing that both skill sets must be enriched for success as a DIO;
    • Design an organizational structure for their educational mission which stresses agility and proficiency; identifying potential contributors and developing their skill sets;
    • Establish a competency in financial principles; understand the options of educational and medical financing, and develop a long-range monetary plan;
    • Demonstrate competency in basic change management techniques and utilize strategies to implement change within their institution;
    • Integrate tools from the field of human resources to manage central and program-level GME leadership; develop a long-range plan based on people as a key need;
    • Demonstrate proficiency in comprehending ACGME policies, and those of other regulatory agencies, and implement appropriate protocols;
    • Be proactive in planning and guiding their institution's GME programs; integrate innovation into the culture;
    • Lead the GME enterprise in the role of advocacy for trainees, faculty, patients, and their institution's community;
    • Synthesize applicable legal standards for medical education; devise appropriate protocols for the GME Office, and convey a standardized approach to others involved in graduate medical education.
